★ Amy Winehouse Essentials

That Saturday, I recall waking up to the sound of my mobile´s notification sounds. They were a couple at first (which I ignored in my dormant state), but after a while those turned into a few more. I was more awake than asleep by then, could not ignore them anymore and I thought: "did something happen?"... and something had happened.

On July 23rd, 2011, the world heard the sad news of the passing of the incomparable Amy Jade Winehouse. Just the night before, I had finished rehearsing a bunch of Alicia Keys songs for what would be a Tribute to the Soul Divas: Alicia Keys and Amy Winehouse. On Monday, we would start rehearsing Amy´s music. As you might expect, this changed everything. The soul divas tribute became a tribute to THE soul diva Amy Winehouse, which I performed a month after her passing in an old-days-style venue back then known as Habana Panamá. It was also my first show as the lead singer of my former band L&TSB. It was a very special night.

Amy continues to be for me, as for many others, an inspiration for the true star she was: an honest songwriter, unapologetic and very herself... in spite of the misfortunate events in her life, which ultimately led her to leave this world way too soon.

I´m sharing this first essentials playlist, which is a selection of my favs (tough to choose only 10), and along with it a few pictures from Before Frank: a photography book portraying Amy in the months prior to the release of her debut album FRANK, by her friend Charles Moriarty. The book consists of images from two shoots: one in London and the other in New York, from which most have remained unpublished until now. Soon-to-be released in September.

Aquél sábado, recuerdo haberme despertado con los sonidos de notificación de mi celular. Al principio eran unos cuantos (los cuales ignoré por completo en mi estado durmiente), pero luego de un rato eran más. Para ese entonces ya estaba más despierta que dormida, ya no podía ignorarlos y pensé: "¿pasó algo?"... y algo había pasado.

El 23 de julio del 2011, el mundo escuchó la triste noticia de la muerte de la incomparable Amy Jade Winehouse. Justo la noche anterior, había terminado de ensayar un montón de canciones de Alicia Keys para lo que sería un Tributo a las Divas del Soul: Alicia Keys y Amy Winehouse. El lunes empezaríamos a ensayar la música de Amy. Como era de esperarse, esto cambió todo. El tributo a las divas del soul se convirtió en un tributo a LA diva del soul Amy Winehouse, el cual interpreté un mes después de su fallecimiento en un lugar de estilo de antaño conocido como Habana Panamá en ese entonces. Era también mi primer show como la vocalista de mi ex-banda L&TSB. Fue una noche muy especial.

Amy continúa siendo para mí, al igual que para muchos otros, una inspiración por ser una verdadera estrella: una compositora honesta, sin remordimientos y muy ella... a pesar de los desafortunados eventos en su vida que la llevaron a dejar este mundo demasiado antes de tiempo.

Les estoy compartiendo mi primer playlist de esenciales, que es una selección de mis favoritas (difícil elegir solo 10), y con éste algunas fotos de Before Frank: un álbum fotográfico de retratos de Amy en los meses previos al lanzamiento de su álbum debut FRANK, tomadas por su amigo Charles Moriarty. El libro consiste en imágenes de dos sesiones: una en Londres y la otra en Nueva York, de las cuales la mayoría han permanecido sin publicar hasta ahora. Será lanzado en Septiembre.
