Love The Music
Shea was leaving to the airport that Saturday morning, but we were determined to get that interview done. He was taking a flight back home to the "City of Angels" to resume the daily grind in the music industry and keep working on his soon-to-be-released album signed to the Blujazz record label and productions of other artists, including upcoming pop-rock artist Daniel Ye and renowned jazz singer Michelle Coltrane.
The night before, Danilo's Jazz Club had been the venue to an incredible display of talent and magic of Welsh's concert along with talented local musicians. A heavily jazz-influenced performance, filled with heart-felt guitar melodies that spoke of life, love, intense emotions and by moments, flashes of the rock n' roll soul he carries within.
I feel musicians who grew up listening to rock music, find a way to impress it into their style, regardless of the genres they perform in. I still get a kick from those old school rock songs I heard during my school years when MTV was the new thing, and the boys around my neighborhood would play Nirvana and Red Hot Chilli Peppers as loud as possible in their garage while skateboarding in the middle of the street. And who doesn't get nostalgic upon memory flashes of those years that remind us of childhood and our first musical interests? You gotta love the music.
Shea reminisces about his early encounters with a guitar as a kid. A friend of his folks had bought one at a sale and given it to him and his brother. At the time, the trumpet was the instrument selection during school education, but it wasn't until the record Led Zeppelin II fell into his hands, that it became clear to him that he needed to play guitar: "there was just something about driving in the car with my parents listening to rock music... you just can't deny what makes your DNA resonate".
A slow shifting of the interest of his musical instrument took place and later broadened as he went to music school and fell in love with jazz and classical music.

That Saturday morning we met at Oro Moreno Panama to enjoy Panama´s finest chocolate and coffee, in the captivating Casa Arias located in Casco Antiguo. As camera lights were being set up and guitars were tuned, it was almost impossible not to naturally flow into a jam.
We met two years earlier during my performance at the closure of the Panama Jazz Festival in 2014. The following year, I was honored to be invited by him to perform his song "Slowly Falling" during PJF 2015, and as a good song usually does, it stuck! Those lyrics started flowing in the middle of the coffee shop as soon as I heard the chords play and our duo audience comprised of the coffee guy and camera man were pleased to listen and enjoy it.
Visiting Panamanian whereabouts
Around 2008, he was invited to a fundraiser event in Brentwood, Los Angeles, held by Earth Train Foundation. For an environmentalist and music lover, this was the perfect event to get invited to. Artists such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Danilo Pérez reunited with the environmentalists and biologists network of the Earth Train Foundation team, getting the word out on how to save the rainforest through music. This was an idea to fall in love with, that Welsh has supported ever since.
EARTH TRAIN: JUNGLEWOOD
The Earth Train Foundation, a U.S. not-for-profit organization established in 1990, has been active in Panama since 2001 where it co-founded and co-manages the 4,000-hectare Mamoní Valley Preserve. The preserve, bordering Guna Yala, the semi autonomous territory of the indigenous Guna, is located in one of the top twenty ecological hotspots on Earth. The foundation is dedicated to promote bicultural renewal: the creation sustainable communities and institutions in harmony with nature and enriched with biological and cultural diversity.
Cross-cultural and cross-generational coaching and mentoring, peer-to-peer teaching and networking, experiential learning, creating learning organizations and cultivation biocultural business are the methods to accomplish such noble mission. Nathan Gray, co-executive director of the Earth Train Foundation in Panama (along with Líder Sucre), told him about a canoe trip during the L.A. fundraiser event. It seemed too amazing to be missed, making Welsh fly down to Panama about a month later to visit the Mamoni Valley Reserve, the Caribbean Coast, San Blas and even gave a clinic at the Danilo Pérez Foundation, where he started to meet talented Panamanian musicians. Coming back for the next jazz fest was a must.
As a recording artist, touring musician, songwriter and producer, it becomes hard to dedicate full time to support other activities, making his collaboration with Earth Train in Panama his big environmental outlet.
While writing this story, I listened to such exquisite musical selection, coming across tear-jerkers gems as Welsh himself describes when sharing his top ten tracks in four different music categories (others were jazz, rock and pop). Some of these are not even available on Spotify yet. Others, are just rare versions online.
Choosing only ten songs can be a tough choice when having such diverse musical taste, but it's what keep the challenge interesting. So after listening, I've made an extended Spotify playlist, with the promise to add some more tracks by the end of the week. Enjoy!
Shea se iba al aeropuerto ese sábado en la mañana, pero estábamos decididos a lograr esa entrevista. Tomaría un vuelo de vuelta a casa en la Ciudad de Los Ángeles para retomar el trajín del día a día en la industria musical y continuar trabajando en su álbum próximo a ser lanzado y firmado por el sello disquera Blujazz, además de producciones de otros artistas, incluyendo al joven talento pop-rock Daniel Ye y la reconocida cantante de jazz Michelle Coltrane.
La noche anterior, el Danilo's Jazz Club había sido sede de un increíble despliegue de talento y magia del concierto de Welsh junto a talentosos músicos locales. Una presentación influenciada por jazz, cargada de sentidas melodías de guitarra que hablaron de la vida, amor, emociones intensas y, por momentos, flashazos del alma rock n' roll que lleva dentro.
Siento que los músicos que crecieron escuchando música rock, encuentran la forma de imprimirlo en su estilo, sin importar el género que interpreten. Aún me llegan esas canciones que escuche durante mis días de escuela, cuando MTV estaba de moda y los chicos de mi barrio sonaban Nirvana y Red Hot Chilli Peppers a todo volumen en el garaje, mientras patinaban en medio de la calle. ¿Y quién no se pone nostálgico con las memorias de esos años que nos recuerdan nuestra infancia y nuestros primeros gustos musicales? Tienes que amar la música.
Shea evoca sus primeros encuentros con la guitarra de niño. Un amigo de sus padres había comprado una en una venta y se la regaló a él y su hermano. En ese entonces, la trompeta era su instrumento de elección durante la educación escolar, pero no fue hasta que el disco Led Zeppelin II cayó en sus manos, que se le hizo clara la necesidad de tocar guitarra: "había algo sobre ir en el carro con mis padres manejando y escuchando música rock... simplemente no puedes negar lo que resuena con tu ADN".
Un sutil cambio de interés en su instrumento musical tomó lugar y se amplió cuando se fue a estudiar música, enamorándose del jazz y la música clásica.

Ese sábado en la mañana nos encontramos en Oro Moreno Panama para disfrutar del más fino chocolate y café panameño en la cautivadora Casa Arias, ubicada en Casco Antiguo. Mientras se preparaban luces y cámaras y se afinaban guitarras, fue casi imposible no fluir naturalmente a un jam.
Nos conocimos dos años antes durante mi presentación en el cierre del Panama Jazz Festival en el 2014. Al año siguiente, tuve el honor de ser invitada a acompañarlo a interpretar su tema "Slowly Falling" en el PJF 2015, y como suele pasar con una buena canción, ¡se quedó! Las letras empezaron a fluir en cuanto escuché sonar los acordes y nuestra audiencia dúo compuesta por el hombre del café y de la cámara estuvieron complacidos de escuchar y disfrutar.
Visitando los lares panameños
Cerca del 2008, fue invitado a un evento para recaudar fondos en Brentwood, Los Angeles, organizado por la fundación Earth Train. Para un ambientalista y amante de la música, este esta el evento perfecto para ser invitado. Artistas de la talla de Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock y Danilo Pérez reunidos con la red de ambientalistas y biólogos de la fundación Earth Train, corriendo la voz sobre cómo salvar la reserva tropical a través de la música. Era una idea para enamorarse, que Welsh ha apoyado desde entonces.
EARTH TRAIN: JUNGLEWOOD
La fundación Earth Train, es una organización estadounidense sin fines de lucro establecida en 1990, y ha estado activa en Panamá desde el 2001, donde co-fundó y co-administra 4,000 hectáreas de reserva tropical en el Valle Mamoní. La reserva, que bordea Guna Yala, el territorio semi autónomo de nuestros indígenas Guna, está situado entre los veinte hotspots ecológicos más importantes en el planeta. La fundación se dedica a promover renovación biocultural: la creación de comunidades sostenibles en armonía con la naturaleza y enriquecida con diversidad biológica y cultural.
Entrenamientos y tutorías interculturales e inter-generacionales, relaciones y enseñanza entre pares, crear organizaciones de enseñanza y el cultivo de negocios bioculturales son métodos utilizados para lograr esta noble misión. Nathan Gray, co-director ejecutivo de la fundación Earth Train en Panamá (junto con Líder Sucre), le contó sobre un recorrido en canoa durante el evento de recaudación de fondos en L.A. Parecía demasiado increíble como para perdérselo, logrando que Welsh viajará a Panamá el mes siguiente a visitar la reserva del Valle Mamoní, la costa del Caribe, San Blas e incluso dio una clínica en la Fundación Danilo Pérez, donde empezó a conocer a talentosos músicos panameños. Regresar para el próximo jazz fest, era un hecho.
Como artista completo grabando producciones, realizando giras, compositor y productor, se vuelve difícil dedicarse a tiempo completo a apoyar otras actividades. Esto hace su colaboración con Earth Train en Panamá su más grande proyecto ambiental.
Mientras escribía esta historia, escuchaba una exquisita selección musical, encontrándome con gemas como el mismo Welsh describió como "arranca lágrimas" cuando compartió sus diez canciones favoritas en cuatro categorías (las otras tres fueron jazz, rock y pop). Algunas de estas no están disponibles en Spotify aún. Otras, son versiones raras en línea.
Escoger solo diez canciones puede ser una selección difícil teniendo un gusto musical tan diverso, pero mantiene el reto interesante. Luego de escuchar, hice una lista de reproducción extendida en Spotify, con la promesa de agregar algunas otras a la lista para el final de la semana. ¡Disfruten!
