Writer's note:

The title was originally: "Music yesterday, today and tomorrow". Of course, because "today, tomorrow and always" would be such a cliché title, I thought. We´ve heard this before, right?, but maybe this was the "appropriate" title for the article. This is the full version of it. Turns out it was slightly edited before publishing and I did not like that, but I want to think it was because I exceeded the amount of words and not because my text made uncomfortable a publisher that doesn't want to get in trouble with others, over what is said or left unsaid with its content. You can't ask an artist to write about her/his thing and not expect her/him to say things as they are. Cordially, but as they are. I repeat: I want to think it was edited because I exceeded the amount of words..."

Undoubtedly, the most beautiful intellectual creation of the human being is music. Despite of its underestimated importance in our lives, it crosses borders with no distinction of race, age, sex, culture, religion and many other barriers and classifications that divide us more than unite us. It prooves beyond science its countless benefits and global transcendence, each time our favorite song draws a smile on our face and each time it helps us release bottled up feelings. A simple "entertainment" tag many solely attribute it, falls too short.

Its constant presence and a development parallel to our evolution, is nothing more than a transcription of our history. From African tribes that communicated complex messages through drums sounds, to "accidental" creations that became iconic sounds of an age. But the art of music, like any powerful communication tool, is a double-edged sword. As Nina Simone once said: "the duty of an artist is to reflect the times he lives in". And I'm not saying with this we should only talk about social and political criticism or messages that appeal to our human consciousness (though it's much needed), since we are human beings and the inspiration to many singer-songwriters come to us as a result of our personal experience, related to basic feelings to which many can relate. Clearly, love and lovelessness, fiesta and joy, will never go out of style. But what happens when darker messages take over the sonority of a society?

Over the years, traditional and emerging musical currents popularized by regions have been documented. Nowadays, digital interconnection has allowed many things. I'm highlighting two: more scope for some genres that seem to drag all others under their line; and more options for the curious listeners who understand that in any corner of the world could be their next favorite band or artist waiting to be discovered, below these musical layers presented to us in almost every popular medium and place we visit.

A rising wave of genres, that we still have a hard labeling and identifying (neither if adding a neo prefix as in neo-soul), the intents to rescue old school sounds combined with technology and the accessibility to be a self-produced artist, opens up a diverse compass never seen before, or should we say: heard before?

However, our ears, far from being constantly amazed by a new discovery, seem to recognize the musical patters everywhere we go. It's always the same sounds on.

Hiatus Kaiyote. The Australian Neo-Soul quartet, with a unique sounds, is of my favorite discoveries

in the latest years. They entered my life in 2014.

There's a world of music we will not be able to hear completely during our earthly transit. Let's cultivate that curiosity to feel something new through music, to learn a new culture, the desire to learn to move our hips to the groove of new rhythms. Let music be your most powerful source of inspiration and motivation. Let music save your soul.

PS. Today's playlist was not planned for this article, since it was written for the magazine and I just wanted to share it. I could have made one about worldly music sounds or something... however, I'm sharing one that includes a few songs of the mentioned band Hiatus Kaiyote, and some other interesting neo soul sounds. Oh! and it's super extender, over 5 hours long. Forget the 10-15 track rule. Enjoy!
